Joseph Pierce Murphy
Born in Ringsend, Dublin, he joined the Royal Navy on his 18th birthday, 7 June, 1910. On 6 August, 1914, he was on board HMS Amphion which was returning to Harwich after being on patrol in the North sea, when it hit a mine and sank. Joseph went down with the ship and was therefore the first 'Dublin' casualty of the Gt. War. (I have seen a claim that he was the first Irish casualty of the Gt. War, however, there was at least one other Irishman, Joseph Lynch of Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork, who went down with the Amphion)
